For those seeking summer activities resources, we offer
the following helpful links or contact information. We do not
endorse any specific service provider, but merely list here some of the
providers we have heard about.
Beyond Words Center for Social Skills Training
The programs sponsored by Beyond Words (404-633-0250) focus on social
skills development, and are conducted under the supervision of Dr. Jeff
Jones.
Camp Soar: This is an
overnight camp for kids with LD and ADHD, though at least one of our members has
used it for her AS child.
Children's
Therapy Works: This therapy practice typically offers a summer
camp program that addresses social skills and other therapy issues.
They may be reached at 770-754-0085.
Galletly Speech-Language Services: 10-12 week social-communicative groups aimed
at providing opportunities for children with autism spectrum disorders to
enhance their receptive, expressive, and pragmatic language abilities
within a setting using the necessary environmental supports, in order to
promote active participation, flexibility, and independence. Contact
Vivian Galletly at 404-604-5131 or e-mail at galletlysplang@yahoo.com, if interested.
Learning on the
Log offers 8 full weeks of summer camp activities including hiking,
swimming, gymnastics and canoeing. Please contact them at info@learningonthelog.com
or you can also call Armann Fenger at 404-579-3048 or Chris Zelski at

Super Summer Camp: This program is put on by Schweitzer-Childs Youth
Development. It runs Monday through Thursday, 10:00--3:00, and targets
social skills, speech and motor development. Unlike many programs, this
camp can be attended on a flexible basis throughout the summer, and siblings
without special needs can be included. They can be contacted at
404-457-2713.
My Summer Camps is a website that provides information about summer camps that permit special needs
children to attend. They have a category for autism in their search process.
Camp Caglewood located in Flowery Branch, Georgia is
designed for children and adults diagnosed as Autism Spectrum, PDD, Down Syndrome,
Cerebral Palsey, and other developmental disabilities. Parents and caregivers send their
loved ones to camp for respite care, and independence growth. Autism Society of America - Greater Georgia Chapter has many summer activities
listed with contact information, disabilities served, ages served, and general information about the
programs.
Finally, some of our members have had success
including their children in summer programs for typical kids run by area
churches. One that was mentioned was the camp run by Our Lady of the
Assumption Catholic Church, in Dekalb County.
If you know of any other summer program for AS
kids, please let us know, and we will add it to the list!
